Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 6

Attacker Domenico Berardi is the standout performer most weeks for Sassuolo, but his display against Inter won him the Player of the Week crown for Matchday 6

2023/24 Serie A leaders Inter suffered their first defeat of the season on Wednesday night at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, with Domenico Berardi playing a starring role for victors Sassuolo and winning our Player of the Week for Matchday 6.

Denzel Dumfries had edged the Nerazzurri ahead in first-half injury time, but the visitors were soon on level terms through a Nedim Bajrami equaliser on 54 minutes, before Berardi secured three points for the Neroverdi.

The deadly left foot of Domenico Berardi

After playing a crucial role in Sassuolo’s 4-2 humiliation of Juventus, it was captain Berardi who was once again providing the most significant contribution to another historic win in the club’s recent history.

Faced with a crowded penalty area, it was the Italian international who played a perfectly weighted pass to Bajrami, who burst forward and fired a low drive past goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Within 10 minutes, the Swiss international was then beaten again, as the 29-year-old sent a curling effort into the net from the edge of the box.

Is Domenico Berardi the greatest player in Sassuolo history?

If reports are to be believed, Berardi was almost displaying his talents in Turin wearing a Juventus shirt and missed the opening weeks of the campaign waiting for the move to materialise, rather than being injured. Had the transfer taken place, there would have been those that suggest his Neroverdi legacy be tarnished, but that isn’t the case.

After joining the club at 16, the attacker has helped the club to Serie B title and promotion to the top-flight, almost single-handedly masterminded victories over famous Italian names like AC Milan, Fiorentina and Sampdoria, and scored over 100 goals for the club. If or when he leaves Sassuolo, the destination will matter little, given the service Berardi has given the Neroverdi.
