After a dream debut on the first weekend of the Serie A season, Napoli attacker Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put in another stunning display when the side returned to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, and was named Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 2. Naturally, he was also included in the Serie A Team of the Week.

The Partenopei welcomed newly promoted Monza to Naples on Sunday evening for the first home fixture of the 2022/23 Serie A season, but that was where their hospitality ended.

Napoli left the Brianzoli on the receiving end of a 4-0 defeat, and the Georgian international grabbed himself a brace alongside goals from Victor Osimhen and Kim Min-jae. Osimhen scoring, in particular, would have come as good news for the home fans while their new defender getting on the scoresheet would also have brought smiles to faces around Campania.

Having won 5-2 against Hellas Verona on Matchday 1. Against Monza, Napoli set a new record for goals scored in the opening two games of a Serie A season with an impressive tally of nine. This new record surpasses the previous figure by one, set during the 2020/21 campaign.

Kvaratskhelia began the scoring for the Azzurri on 35 minutes, cutting in from the left and curling a wonderful effort into the top corner past Michele Di Gregorio. Osimhen then converted a corner kick to double their lead in first-half injury time.

On 62 minutes, the 21-year-old forward then drifted past a couple of Monza players and fired a low well-placed shot into the inside side netting, that left the Brianzoli custodian helpless and became the first player in Napoli’s history to score at least 3 goals in their first two Serie A games.

With the side from Lombardia deflated, the Partenopei completed the scoring three minutes into added time, when fellow summer signing Min-jae was left unmarked to head home another corner delivery from Piotr Zielinski.

Napoli end Matchday 2 at the top of the table with a 100% record maintained, having won each of their two games to date.
