It hasn’t been an easy week for Italy as a country and away from the football pitches, with historic droughts coming to a dramatic end with unprecedented rainfall leading to severe flooding and loss of life in areas, particularly in Emilia-Romagna. With Serie A returning to action for Matchday 36, tributes were seen in a number of grounds and minute’s silences were observed before kick-offs up and down the peninsula.
Things got started on Friday night with Monza claiming a 2-1 comeback win over Sassuolo in Reggio Emilia. Domenico Berardi had put the hosts ahead, but Patrick Ciurria levelled on the hour mark and Matteo Pessina netted a stoppage-time winner.

Saturday’s action continued with Bologna putting on a real show in Cremona. The Rossoblu all but confirmed that Cremonese would return to Serie B in their first top-flight season by running out emphatic 5-1 winners. A draw between Spezia and Lecce will see the Grigiorossi relegated.
Atalanta knew they needed nothing less than a win to keep Europa League qualification hopes alive as they hosted Verona. Despite falling behind, La Dea netted three times and comfortably won the game 3-1, moving above AS Roma in the process.
Saturday’s action ended with AC Milan’s emphatic 5-1 victory at home against Sampdoria which ended with Olivier Giroud bagging a hat-trick.

Sunday kicked off with a relegation six-pointer between Lecce and Spezia, though their draw did little for either. It did, though, relegate Cremonese.
Torino and Fiorentina ended 1-1, Napoli beat Inter 3-1 and Lazio won narrowly away at Udinese.
Monday’s action was overshadowed by Juventus being handed a 10-point deduction in the latest development of their capital gains case, though they then lost 4-1 at Empoli. AS Roma and Salernitana drew 2-2.
