Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 12

Giacomo Bonaventura was vital again as Fiorentina beat Bologna 2-1 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi and won the 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week award for Matchday 12.

Fiorentina won the Derby dell’Appennino with a 2-1 over Bologna at the Stadio Artemio Franchi and Giacomo Bonaventura was rewarded for his performance with our 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week award for Matchday 12.

The veteran midfielder scored the first goal in Florence and Nicolas Gonzalez‘s penalty sealed the win, after Joshua Zirkzee scored an equaliser also from the penalty spot for the Rossoblu. He also booked his place in our Team of the Week.

Fiorentina and Bonaventura love playing Bologna

When Bonaventura spun in the box and sent a powerful drive beyond goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski on 17 minutes, he equalled a personal best goal tally against one club, having also scored six goals against Napoli during a 16-year top-flight career.

It was the 34-year-old’s 100th Serie A goal involvement, with 61 strikes and 39 assists whilst with Atalanta, AC Milan and now the Viola. The Italian’s current club also enjoy facing Bologna, with their 57th win ensuring that the Rossoblu remain the team that they have defeated most often in Serie A.

Giacomo Bonaventura rolling back the years this season

Along with Andrea Colpani of Monza, no midfielder in Serie A has been involved in more goals this term than Bonaventura, with five goals and two assists, which recently prompted Italian Men’s national team coach Luciano Spalletti to recall him for the recent 2024 European Championship qualifiers.

With 26 games still to play, Bonaventura could yet surpass his best Serie A season in terms of output, 2015/16 when he scored six goals and provided 11 assists whilst plying his trade with the Rossoneri. However, Azzurri supporters will only be focusing on his contribution in the vital qualifying fixtures against North Macedonia and Ukraine.
