Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 16

Newly crowned African Men's Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, was the star as Napoli overcame Cagliar 2-1 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and won the 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week prize for Matchday 16.

Victor Osimhen was at his influential best as Napoli defeated Cagliari 2-1 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and won the 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week award for Matchday 16.

The reigning champions have failed to hit the heights of last season, but the Nigerian striker continues to shine for the Partenopei and played a part in both of the goals against the Rossoblu in Naples.

Although it was Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who scored the vital goal against Cagliari, it was Osimhen who was the undoubted star of the contest with a goal and assist to help secure a valuable three points, as they look to break into the top four.

After powerfully heading home a Mario Rui cross on 69 minutes, Leonardo Pavoletti immediately equalised for the visitors, but the 24-year-old displayed spectacular technique and inventiveness to control a ball on his chest, juggle it through a crowd of players and send a low cross across the box for the Georgian to fire home.

Victor Osimhen wins 2023 African Men’s Footballer of the Year

The former Lille striker’s performance was an instant reminder of why he was crowned the 2023 African Men’s Footballer of the Year five days before, ahead of Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain, and became the first Nigerian since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999 to win the prize.

Although Osimhen did not appear at the 2023 World Cup, where Morocco progressed to the semi-finals and influenced the inclusion of Hakimi in the top three, the 26 goals that helped end Napoli’s 33-year wait for a Serie A title was enough to convince the panel that he stood above his peers in 2023.
