Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 2

There were some big results and big displays on Matchday 2 of the new Serie A season, but it was Monza's Andrea Colpani who impressed the most to become our Player of the Week.

Andrea Colpani played a starring role for Monza in their Serie A encounter against Empoli, scoring both goals in their 2-0 victory at the U-Power Stadium, and he is our Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 2 of the 2023/24 season.

The 24-year-old had a respectable campaign when the Brianzoli had their maiden Serie A campaign in 2022/23, scoring four times in 27 appearances. However, he might be on his way to eclipsing that tally in 2023/23 after his performance against the Tuscans.

Colpani imitates Candreva in stunning fashion

It was a match which Monza deservedly won after having the majority of the possession with 54%, and producing an xG of 1.99 compared to the 0.97 of Empoli. Despite the quality of their play, the Brianzoli needed the individual brilliance of Colpani to earn the three points and he did so in style.

His first goal was very similar to one that Antonio Candreva scored for Salernitana in their draw away to AS Roma on Matchday 1. He received the ball just outside of the penalty area, dribbled around an opponent, and unleashed a thunderous shot with his left foot.

Colpani doubled Monza’s lead in the second half, producing a powerful header that Empoli goalkeeper Samuele Perisan tried in vain to keep out. The midfielder could have scored prior to his brace but Perisan had saved that effort.

Although Colpani recently signed a contract extension which will keep him at the club until June 2028, Calciomercato.com reports that Inter, Juventus, and AS Roma will focus their attention on the Monza midfielder.

The 24-year-old is an energetic runner in midfield and he knows how to time his runs into the penalty area very well. If he starts scoring on a regular basis, it will be great for the Brianzoli this season, but it can also mean that his future might lie elsewhere at the end of the campaign.
