Yacine Adli dictated the play in the AC Milan as the Rossoneri registered a convincing 3-1 victory against a timid and uninspiring AS Roma side. The Frenchman was also named our 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 20.

The victory keeps the Italian giants comfortably in third place, and Diavolo coach Stefano Pioli should not fear the sack for the time behind. However, this result had ramifications for his Giallorossi counterpart Jose Mourinho, who was sacked on Tuesday morning.

Adli runs the show in the AC Milan midfield

When Adli returned to AC Milan from his loan deal at Girondins de Bordeaux in the summer of 2022, he had spent the previous campaign playing as an attacking midfielder in the 4-2-3-1 formation. Playing opportunities were very limited in 2022/23, but Pioli has slowly integrated him into the team this season.

Operating as the deep-lying playmaker for the Rossoneri, the 23-year-old impressed in the victory against AS Roma. He opened the scoring after shifting to his left and placing a shot into the bottom corner, but there was more to that performance than his goal.

Adli completed all two of his dribbles; successfully completed 90.5% of his passes; hit four long balls with an accuracy of 100%; and made three tackles, more than anyone else on the pitch. He was comfortable with ball at his feet for extended periods, making 40 carries.

The Frenchman initially struggled to fit at Milan, but he has now found a role in which he can be an asset for the team, and he can only get better.

Is the Serie A title out of reach for AC Milan?

Although AC Milan have won four of their last five Serie A matches, it seems unlikely that the Rossoneri can fight for the scudetto. They are nine points behind leaders and city rivals Inter, and seven points clear of Juventus in second place.

It is remarkable that the Diavolo are still in the Champions League spots considering the injuries that they have suffered, and that star winger Rafael Leao has had a disappointing season.

Despite the recent turn in form and improved performances, AC Milan will need the duo above them to hit a form slump or experience an injury crisis of their own, which looks unlikely at this stage.
