Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 21

Empoli secured a morale boosting 3-0 win over Monza, as a Szymon Zurkowski scored a hat-trick and was named 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 21.

Hat-trick hero Szymon Zurkowski was the 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 21, as Empoli recorded a much-needed 3-0 win over Monza at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.

The Azzurri have spent the campaign battling against relegation and recently appointed coach Davide Nicola to turn around their fortunes, and a vital three points put them in touching distance of Cagliari in 18th.

Will Zurkowski fire Empoli to Serie A safety?

Although arriving during the January transfer window to bolster the squad, few could have predicted the impact the 26-year-old would have the team’s goalscoring fortunes, after goalless spells with Fiorentina and Spezia.

The Viola brought the midfielder to Serie A in the summer of 2019, but almost immediately loaned him to Empoli in the second tier. After helping the club back to the top flight, though, Zurkowski did score six times for the club during the 2021/22 season, and want more of the same.

A perfect hat-trick completes a perfect performance for Zurkowski

When the Poland international sent a wonderful right-foot volley from the edge of the box flying past Alessandro Sorrentino on 13 minutes, it set Zurkowski on course for a perfect hat-trick – scoring with both feet and head.

Just before the break, the Spezia loanee made a late run into the box and met a high ball with his head and sent it looping over several Monza players. It was a similar story with 15 minutes remaining, as the midfielder fired home a poor clearance with his left foot.
