Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 22

Ruben Loftus-Cheek nearly fired AC Milan to victory over Bologna, and despite the 2-2 draw at the Stadio San Siro, he was still named our 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 22.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek could not stop AC Milan dropping two vital points against Bologna, but he did put in a performance that saw him awarded the 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 22.

The Rossoneri drew 2-2 with Rossoblu at the Stadio San Siro on Saturday night, as the English midfielder netted a brace, but missed penalties from Olivier Giroud and Theo Hernandez meant they failed to close the gap on Juventus, who also drew against Empoli.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek thriving in attacking midfield role

After arriving from Chelsea during the summer, coach Stefano Pioli’s switch to a 4-3-3 formation saw the 28-year-old occupy a deeper role as one of the midfield trio, but after returning to his much-used 4-2-3-1, has occupied a position behind the central striker and excelled.

Loftus-Cheek netted in wins over Empoli and Udinese, and his double against Bologna means no other midfielder has scored more goals in Europe’s top five leagues in 2024. Both came from perfectly timed bursts into the opposition penalty area, first to slide home an equaliser just before half-time and then power home a header to make it 2-1 on 83 minutes.

Could Loftus-Cheek make the England squad for Euro 2024?

When Gareth Southgate took over as England coach, he appeared quite taken with the then-Crystal Palace loanee, despite his struggles for fitness, and he eventually became an important part of the national side that travelled to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

However, as Loftus-Cheek’s career stalled back at parent club Chelsea once more, international appearances dried up and he last pulled on an England shirt in November 2018. With few other players offering the dynamism, strength and technical ability of the Milan midfielder, he could act as the perfect backup for Jude Bellingham at the 2024 European Championship.
