A brace from Riccardo Orsolini helped Bologna to a 4-0 win over Lecce and maintained their push for European qualification, as the Italian was named 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 24.
Victory at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara for the Rossoblu ensured they remained three points behind fourth-placed Atalanta, with Sam Beukema and Jens Odgaard grabbing the other goals in Emilia-Romagna.
Is Riccardo Orsolini on course for a career-best Serie A goals haul?
Orsolini also netted a Serie A double against Lecce back in December 2019 and probably should have had a hat-trick in this encounter after firing through the legs of goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone on 27 minutes, but was wasteful in front of goal at times.
However, an eighth goal of the campaign arrived just after half-time, when the former Ascoli youngster curled in a trademark left-footed effort to put the result beyond doubt. Last term, Orsolini scored 11 goals in Serie A and his focus will be on surpassing that record.
Is Riccardo Orsolini becoming the new Domenico Berardi?
Although there are just two years between Orsolini and Sassuolo’s Domenico Berardi, it feels like 27-year-old’s career is mirroring the Neroverdi attacker, and since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, Berardi is the only Italian to have netted more times.
With a similarly cultured left foot, European qualification in any form is likely to keep Orsolini at Bologna and, like Berardi, could run out of time to test himself at elite club level, which a move to Juventus as a youngster in 2017 had intended to do.
