Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 27

Riccardo Calafiori helped Bologna to a win over Champions League qualification rivals Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium and was named 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 27.

Riccardo Calafiori was named 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 27, after helping Bologna to a 2-1 win over Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium on Sunday night.

The Rossoblu went behind in Bergamo to an Ademola Lookman goal, but hit back through a Joshua Zirkzee penalty and a classy strike from captain Lewis Ferguson.

The win really strengthens Bologna‘s chances of qualifying for the Champions League this season as they now sit in fourth place, four points ahead of AS Roma.

Calafiori finally feeling at home in Bologna

After struggling to make a permanent impression at hometown club AS Roma, the Italian youngster has now become a vital component of a side looking to secure Champions League qualification.

However, Calafiori first experienced a challenging time with Genoa, with three Serie A appearances for the Grifone meaning he played a minimal role in their relegation to Serie B. Performances for next club Basel, though, brought an immediate return to Italy where he now shines.

Is an Azzurri call-up coming for Calafiori?

Despite helping Bologna to a top-four place as it stands this term, it might be too early for Calafiori to oust Federico Dimarco and Alessandro Bastoni from the Italy Men’s National Team squad for the 2024 European Championship.

However, with the 21-year-old able to operate at either left-back or centre-back, like the Inter duo, coach Luciano Spalletti could choose to check out the ex-Roma youth during the March international break.
