Atalanta new boy Gianluca Scamacca got off the mark for his new club on Matchday 3 of the 2023/24 Serie A campaign as La Dea defeated Monza 3-0 at the Gewiss Stadium and was crowned our Serie A Player of the Week. Of course, he also leads the line in our Team of the Week which you can see here.

With Duvan Zapata having recently left Bergamo for Torino, the goals of the €30m summer signing from West Ham United will be even more vital to the Nerazzurri’s Champions League qualification aspirations this term.

Scamacca steps up as Atalanta’s main man

Immediately after the transfer window had closed was the perfect time for the Italy international to show the Atalanta fans his goalscoring prowess, and after Ederson had given them the lead on 35 minutes, the 24-year-old rose to power a header past goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.

With 28 minutes still to go until the final whistle, the ex-Sassuolo striker then put the three points firmly beyond doubt with a quickly taken snapshot from the edge of the box with his left foot that arrowed into the bottom corner.

Can Scamacca take Atalanta to Europa League glory?

With a Europa League group containing Rakow Czestochowa, Sporting Clube de Portugal and Sturm Graz, La Dea will fancy their chances of reaching the knockout stages and maybe even reaching the final in Dublin at the end of the season, and Scamacca’s goals will be vital.

The Italian international may have missed out on the Europa Conference League final as the Londoners defeated Fiorentina in Prague, but he scored an impressive five times in nine appearances and could have a similar impact for Atalanta this term.
