Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 5

He may have been around for a long time but Giacomo Bonaventura is still producing fine displays for Fiorentina and his latest has made him our Serie A Player of the Week for Matchday 5.

Giacomo Bonaventura rolled back the years on his 100th Serie A appearance for Fiorentina, with his performance against Udinese on Sunday afternoon enough to win him the 2023/24 Player of the Week award for Matchday 5.

The Viola maintained their push for Champions League qualification by defeating the Zebrette 2-0 at the Stadio Friuli and the 34-year-old played a major role with an assist for Lucas Martinez Quarta’s opener and added a late second himself.

Centurion Bonaventura

Despite completing Serie A centuries with both Atalanta and AC Milan, the Italian is still going strong and since signing from the Rossoneri during the summer of 2020, he has been crucial to their improvement both at home and abroad in recent seasons.

However, although Bonaventura has provided great service to the trio, prolific goalscoring has not always been the most impressive attribute within his armoury. After rushing to the edge of the Udinese box to fire home two minutes into injury time, he now has three goals already this season.

Could Fiorentina challenge for Champions League qualification?

On 31 minutes, with the game drifting towards a goalless first half, it was Bonaventura who set Fiorentina on the road to victory with a perfectly weighted pass over the Zebrette defence and Viola centre-back Martinez-Quarta found himself stroking the ball past the goalkeeper.

The three points moved the Tuscan side into fifth place and they are already dreaming of Champions League qualification, and Bonaventura will be crucial to their hopes. However, after Juventus’ ban from European competition allowed Fiorentina another shot at Europa Conference League glory, a more realistic target could be maintaining their current status.
