Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 7

With Inter struggling to find a way past Salernitana, Lautaro Martinez arrived from the bench to win Player of the Week for Matchday 7 with his four-goal heroics.

Salernitana were within 30 minutes of recording their first clean sheet of the season, but a four-goal display from substitute Lautaro Martinez took Inter to victory and won the Argentine the 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week award for Matchday 7. Of course, he is also present in our Team of the Week as well.

Although Sassuolo are the only other team yet to shut out an opposition attack, they stunned the Nerazzurri when defeating them during the previous round of fixtures. So the Milanese giants’ 4-0 victory at the Stadio Arechi on Saturday night was the perfect way to get their Scudetto hopes back on track.

Lautaro Martinez loves facing Salernitana

Ahead of the fixture, Martinez had scored a goal every 48 minutes when facing Salernitana in Serie A, including a hat-trick against the Granata in March 2022, so it was a surprise that coach Simone Inzaghi started the 2022 World Cup winner on the bench.

The upcoming visit of Benfica to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in the Champions League in midweek will have been a factor, but it did not matter to the 26-year-old, who beat his previous minutes to goal ratio – 37 minutes against Cremonese – by a full seven minutes. Also becoming the first player to score four times from the bench in Serie A.

Is Lautaro Martinez the favourite for the Capocannoniere?

Fellow Argentine Mauro Icardi was the last Inter player to finish the Serie A season as top scorer during the 2017-18 campaign, albeit alongside Lazio striker Ciro Immobile, and with nine goals in his first seven appearances, Martinez is already four goals ahead of last seasons winner Victor Osimhen.

Against Salernitana, the South American showed how clinical he has become since joining Inter in the summer of 2018 and scored from his only four shots on goal. The first was an instinctive dink over goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa as he dived at the feet of Martinez. Two first-time finishes with either foot followed and, finally, a penalty from which he sent Ochoa the wrong way.
