Serie A Matchday 8 saw a number of impressive individual performances, but nobody shone brighter than Romelu Lukaku who was named our Player of the Week.

AS Roma secured back-to-back Serie A victories for the first time this season, as a Romelu Lukaku brace helped them to a 4-1 win over a struggling Cagliari side and saw the ex-Inter striker named 2023/24 Player of the Week for Matchday 8.

The win at the Sardegna Arena on Sunday evening ensured that the Giallorossi had lifted themselves out of the bottom half of the Serie A standings ahead of the international break and gives coach Jose Mourinho something to build upon when domestic action resumes.

Romelu Lukaku looking lethal once more

After a difficult season back at Inter last term – on loan from Premier League side Chelsea – the 30-year-old is looking to rediscover the form that helped the Nerazzurri to the 2020/21 scudetto and push Roma closer to Champions League qualification, and has hit five goals in six Serie A appearances. Which only Gabriel Batistuta has bettered since 1994/95 and Italy moved to three points for a win.

Within a minute of Houssem Aouar giving the Giallorossi the lead, Rick Karsdorp was charging back down the right flank and the Belgian international drifted into the Cagliari box to chest the cross into the net from close range. After Andrea Belotti had added a thrd shortly after half-time, Lukaku displayed wonderful technique to control the ball, cut inside his marker and curl a fourth around goalkeeper Simone Scuffet.

Inter reunion on the horizon for Lukaku

While Lukaku will now turn his immediate attention to international action with Belgium, a trip to former side Inter on Matchday 10 is quickly edging closer. The striker will have mixed feelings heading back to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, after looking destined for a third stint at the club this season and then appearing set to join Juventus before ending up in Rome.

During his first two seasons with the Nerazzurri, Lukaku was unstoppable as he netted 64 goals in 95 appearances in all competitions and lifted the Serie A title with them in 2020/21 and just missing out on the Europa League the year before. However, despite 14 goals in 37 games on loan last season and winning the Coppa Italia, his campaign was disrupted by injury and he will want to show his former employers he still has plenty to offer when they meet.
