Frosinone will be one of the 20 top-flight clubs competing in the 2023/23 Serie A season, sealing their promotion from Serie B on Monday, May 1 with a 3-1 win at home to Reggina. The Canarini, coached by Fabio Grosso, booked their return to Serie A for just their third season in the top tier on Matchday 35 of 38.

With three Matchdays left to play, Frosinone boast a 10-point gap over third-placed Bari after the Pugliese side had drawn earlier in the day.

Frosinone last played in Serie A in the 2018/19 season. Then, they were relegated in 19th place with 25 points alongside Chievo (bottom, 17 points) and Empoli (18th, 38 points).

Genoa, currently second in the table and six points above Bari, are expected to follow Frosinone in returning to the top flight. The Grifone, who were relegated from Serie A just last season, may well have double reason for celebration this summer with city rivals Sampdoria set to be relegated. That will, unfortunately, mean another season without a Derby della Lanterna, unless they cross paths in the Coppa Italia next season.

Frosinone Serie A history

The 2023/24 season will be just Frosinone’s third in the top flight of Italian football. They have never managed to avoid relegation from Serie A.

The Canarini first reached Serie A alongside fellow minnows Carpi for the 2015/16 campaign. Then, they finished 19th with 31 points and fell straight back down to Serie B, as did Carpi in 17th with 38 points.

They returned to Serie A for the 2018/19 season and were relegated again in 19th place with 25 points.
