Serie A Femminile 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 5

Elena Linari's blockbuster strike against Sampdoria, coupled with a second goal late in the game, means that the AS Roma defender is Serie A Femminile Player of the Week for Matchday 5.

Matchday 5 in Serie A Femminile had a number of very impressive individual performances which means that AS Roma‘s Elena Linari has done incredibly well to take the award.

What is even more intriguing about her winning Serie A Femminile Player of the Week for Matchday 5 is that she won it for her attacking exploits, rather than her defending.

It was actually a very quiet day at the office for AS Roma from a defensive perspective as they were up against Sampdoria, who have just one win to their name. It was a very impressive 5-0 win for the Giallorosse which keeps them at the top of the table, with only Juventus matching their 100% record.

Linari’s double against Sampdoria

We all know that Linari is an extremely good defender and she is one of the real leaders in this history-making Roma side. Alessandro Spugna and all of her teammates trust her immensely, and she repaid that trust in a way that few would have expected.

It had taken Roma longer than expected to take the lead against Sampdoria and with halftime approaching, Linari picked up the ball around 25 yards from goal and hit a wicked shot into the top corner which Amanda Tampieri was never going to reach.

Just for good measure, Linari stepped up to score a penalty at the end of the game, kept a clean sheet, and made her the clear pick for Player of the Week.

Honourable mentions go out to both Kosovare Asllani at AC Milan and Valentina Giacinti of Roma, who both netted two goals each. The nature of Linari’s, though, meant that she had to win.
