AS Roma Women claimed three huge points away to Juventus on Matchday 6 of the 2023/24 Serie A Femminile season, with Manuela Giugliano starring in midfield and opening the scoring for the defending Italian champions. Giugliano‘s performance sees her take our Player of the Week award for the weekend’s action and, of course, earned her a place in our Team of the Week as well.

With both Roma and Juventus coming into Matchday 6 unbeaten and with 15 points from the 15 that had been on offer, at least one of Italy’s two remaining 100% records was always going to end. Things started well, with both sides looking to find a way to open the scoring. Giugliano came closest to doing so by thumping a long-range free-kick off the crossbar, beating Pauline Peyraud-Magnin only to be frustrated by the woodwork.

That frustration wouldn’t last though, and Giugliano was on hand to head home the opener from close range after Peyraud-Magnin had done well to deny Emilie Haavi. Both sides had chances before the break, but the two sides went in level at the break before Haavi and Evelyne Viens scored early in the second half to give Roma a three-goal cushion that Julia Grosso responded to for the hosts.

Giugliano, Greggi and co. key as Roma Women dominate Juventus

Haavi and Viens were excellent in attack, but Giugliano and midfield partner Giada Greggi were almost perfect in their control of the midfield. The Roma pair had complete control of things when in possession, and each pressed relentlessly to win the ball back when Juventus had it.

Any of the four aforementioned Roma players would have been worthy winners of this week’s Player of the Week, but Giugliano just edged Greggi, Haavi and Viens.
