After what hasn’t been the easiest start to the 2023/24 Serie A Femminile season for Sassuolo Women or new signing Loreta Kullashi, things clicked on an individual and team basis on Matchday 9 as the forward netted a hat-trick in a 4-0 win away at Sampdoria. Kullashi‘s performance earned her our Serie A Femminile Player of the Week award for the weekend.

Born in Helsinki, Finland, the 24-year-old Sweden international arrived at Sassuolo in the summer of 2023 and has so far struggled to establish herself under Gianpiero Piovani, at times looking more suited to a deeper No.10 role than that of a striker.

But things went emphatically her way as the Neroverde travelled to take on Sampdoria on Matchday 9, in the final fixture of the first round of matches of the regular season. Beyond scoring three goals herself, Kullashi also assisted strike partner Lana Clelland for the game’s only other goal.

Slow starters again, but are Sassuolo finding their rhythm?

Sassuolo had a tricky start to the 2022/23 season as well, before the league split at the end of the regular season. Once in the Survival Pool, Piovani‘s side looked back to their 2021/22 levels and were a long way better than anybody else in the bottom half, comfortably winning their mini-league ahead of Como Women, Pomigliano, Sampdoria and relegated Parma.

This season has followed a similar pattern. Things haven’t clicked in attack for the most part, but there have been signs of late that Clelland, Italian Golden Girl winner Chiara Beccari, and now Kullashi are finding their feet up top.

Sampdoria had looked like they could be one of the stronger bottom-half sides this season, but Sassuolo made light work of the Blucerchiate and Piovani will be encouraged with what he saw from his team. Now, the challenge will be to chain together a series of results and start to climb the table earlier this term than they managed last. With AC Milan struggling so far, Sassuolo may even be able to push for a surprise top-half regular season finish and find themselves in the Scudetto Pool.
