In a season full of drama, goals, and sensational football, Inter were crowned Serie A champions in 2023/24 and the Nerazzurri had a prolific attack to thank for their 20th title.

Whilst Lautaro Martinez claimed the capocannoniere as Serie A’s top scorer with 24 goals, it was often Italian football’s more creative players who caught the eye this term and that is reflected in the assists laid on by the star men at Inter, AC Milan, AS Roma and Atalanta.

Meanwhile, reigning champions Napoli endured a torrid campaign and that is highlighted by just one of their players breaking into the top 10 assist makers in 2023/24, in comparison to three last year. Yet, Juventus‘ players fared even worse, with Weston McKennie‘s club high seven assists not enough to trouble the top 10.

Perhaps the most notable drop off was Udinese‘s Roberto Pereyra though, who went from sixth last term to 44th this year.

AC Milan and Atalanta lead the way

Despite coming in for criticism after a somewhat subdued season by his own high standards, Milan forward Rafael Leao was still able to lay on 10 goals for teammates from 34 Serie A games to claim second place in the battle to be assist king.

It saw him match Inter midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, although the former Armenia international featured in two additional matches across the title-winning campaign.

Milan certainly spread the goals around the team, with Christian Pulisic providing nine assists in 36 games in his debut season in Italy, whilst veteran striker Olivier Giroud also laid on eight.

Atalanta pair Ademola Lookman and Charles De Ketelaere also provided eight assists each as the Europa League champions enjoyed an excellent end to the season.

Dybala dazzles again

Elsewhere, Roma star Paulo Dybala was at his best and was the league’s fourth most creative outlet, having provided nine assists in just 28 appearances. The Argentine was often rested for Europa League commitments, but his impact for Roma cannot be overstated.

Across the city, Lazio midfielder Luis Alberto was a rare bright spot in an otherwise underwhelming campaign for the Aquile and set up eight goals, whilst last year’s breakout star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia posted as many for Napoli.

Despite the best efforts of the competition, nobody could deny Inter forward Marcus Thuram in his debut season in Serie A. The France international took the league by storm thanks to his magnificent partnership with Martinez, and was the perfect foil for the Argentine.

Indeed, the summer arrival from Borussia Monchengladbach could not have wished for a better first year at the club and his 13 league goals were matched by as many assists, putting him three clear of Leao.

Thuram‘s most productive games came early on, as he provided two assists against Fiorentina and Salernitana respectively in September, whilst he also teed up a crucial Martinez equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Juventus in November.
