What is the Serie A record transfer?

Serie A clubs have spent a fair amount of money over the years, although right now it is more of a shop for wealthier clubs. With that in mind, what is the most amount of money that any Serie A club has paid for a player?

There was a time when Serie A ruled the continent and massive fees were being paid for some of the best stars in the world. Those times are not the present day, with the likes of AC Milan, Inter, Juventus and AS Roma all suffering from their own financial limitations and concerns.

Nonetheless, there have been some very big transfer fees paid out to bring players to the Italian top flight over the years and the one at the top of the list could stay there for a little while yet. The focus right now in Serie A is selling players for huge fees, and there are some very valuable players in the league.

Some really wonderful players have been brought to Serie A or moved around within Serie A for massive fees, but there are also some that will really make you wince.

Cristiano Ronaldo joins Juventus

No real prizes for guessing who the most expensive player in Serie A history is. Cristiano Ronaldo‘s decision to join Juventus ahead of the 2018/19 season was seen as a real suggestion that Serie A was back on the up.

One of the world’s greatest-ever players, still at his peak, decided to join a league that hadn’t seen a Champions League winner since 2010 and barely had any title battles in the preceding years.

Really, it was a wonderfully talented and wonderfully egotistical player thinking that he could be the man central to ending Juventus’s Champions League glory drought. Their last triumph came in 1996.

The Bianconeri forked out a whopping €117 million for the Portuguese star, more than any Serie A team had paid before. As far as goal return, you can’t argue with Ronaldo’s impact. He scored 101 Juventus goals in 134 games and also got 22 assists.

That being said, they did not win the Champions League with him in the side, it halted the development of many other players and totally messed up the wage structure of the club, eventually leading to Juventus‘ stranglehold on the Scudetto slipping. They have now not won the title for three consecutive seasons, having won it every year for the past nine before then.

Serie A record transfers

As for the 10 most expensive transfers that we have ever seen in Serie A, it is a list dominated by Juventus as they are the most successful team in the land. The top five deals were all done by the Bianconeri.

There are a couple of deals that will really sting for any Juventus fans reading, with Arthur Melo really springing to mind.

Victor Osimhen is the most expensive player a Serie A club has signed that did not join Juventus, and it would not be a surprise to see him move for an even bigger fee this summer with the likes of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain interested.
