Serie A 2023/24 top goalscorer: Who topped the Capocannoniere charts?

Inter might have lifted the 2023/24 Serie A title, but which player helped themselves to the top scorer crown?

-

With the 2023/24 Serie A title going to Inter and champions Napoli falling as low as 10th place, it was perhaps no surprise that the Partenopei’s marksman Victor Osimhen fell short of defending his Capocannoniere crown after a phenomenal 2022/23 campaign. But who was the top scorer in Serie A in 2023/24?

With Inter, AC Milan and Juventus occupying the top three places in the standings for most of the campaign, there was plenty of representation from the traditional powers of Italian football, yet the likes of Rossoneri attackers Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao failed to make it into the Top 10 of Serie A’s goalscoring charts this season.

Gianluca Scamacca, who returned from the Premier League to help Atalanta to Champions League qualification and Europa League success, was also absent. As was Joshua Zirkzee, despite Bologna having one of the best domestic campaigns in recent years.

Previous and serial winner Ciro Immobile was also missing as he finished the season with just seven goals in Serie A.

Serie A top goalscorers: The usual suspects

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic celebrates the opening goal against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia (@juventusfc).

While Biancocelesti legend Immobile had a woeful campaign in front of goal, the Top 10 was still full of names who would have been favourites to land the prize at the start of the season, with Juventus frontman Dusan Vlahovic in second place with 16 goals and closely followed by ageing Milan striker Olivier Giroud.

Osimhen joined the Frenchman on 15 goals, but played significantly fewer matches through injury and international duty mid-season with the Africa Cup of Nations.

AS Roma duo Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku were part of a handful of players that struck 13 times, but those goals were not enough to secure the Giallorossi the Champions League qualification spot they craved.

Serie A top goalscorers: Surprise inclusions

The impressive showing from newly promoted Genoa last term owed much to the performances of attacking midfielder Albert Gudmundsson and the 26-year-old had never reached double figures during a top-flight campaign, but hit 14 goals as the Grifone comfortably avoided a return to Serie B.

Although far more prolific during his career, Duvan Zapata could be considered a surprise inclusion in the Top 10 after beginning the season with Atalanta, and scoring for La Dea, but after being deemed surplus to requirements in Bergamo he then excelled at Torino with another 12 strikes.

Impressive 13-goal returns from Inter pair Marcus Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu reflect stellar seasons at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, but it was the debut Serie A campaign for the Frenchman and a perfect record from the penalty stop aided the Turkish international.

2023/24 Serie A top scorer: Lautaro Martinez

Lautaro Martinez takes aim at the Atletico Madrid goal during Inter’s 2023/24 Champions League Last 16 clash with the Spanish club (@Inter).

A brace from Lautaro Martinez against Monza on the opening weekend suggested the Argentine would relish his promotion to Inter captain and led the team to Scudetto that probably should have arrived much earlier, such was the consistency of the Nerazzurri under coach Simone Inzaghi.

The 2022 World Cup winner struck five times in his first three Serie A appearances and then scored four times against Salernitana, despite featuring for just 35 minutes after coming off the bench. When 2023 ended early because of a thigh injury, Martinez‘s 15 goals in 16 outings had many wondering whether this would be a record-breaking season for the ex-Racing Club hitman.

On his return, eight goals in eight games kept those hopes alive. As the Nerazzurri’s European campaign faltered and the Serie A title became a foregone conclusion, though, the 26-year-old scored just once more to bring his total to 24, but was too far ahead to be caught.
