The 2023/24 Serie B campaign has drawn to a close with Como securing a place in Serie A, forcing Venezia into the playoffs, whereas Ascoli have been relegated to Serie C, and Bari face Ternana in a playoff.

A 1-1 draw against Cosenza was enough for the Azzurri to make their return to Italian top-flight for the first time since 2002/03, while the Arancioneroverdi lost 2-1 away to Spezia, who managed to avoid a second relegation in as many seasons.

Meanwhile, Bari got a much-needed victory against Brescia, and Ternana just needed one goal to defeat Feralpisalo, which meant that Ascoli’s 2-1 win against Pisa was not enough for Il Picchio to avoid the drop.

Como secure draw as Venezia fall in La Spezia

For Venezia to stand any chance of securing direct promotion, they had to defeat Spezia and hope Cosenza would do them a favour by defeating Como. At half-time, it seemed that everything was going to plan for the Arancioneroverdi.

In La Spezia, Jay Idzes gave the Venetians the lead against the Aquilotti in the 17th minute, while in Como, the Lupi went 1-0 up after 30 minutes thanks to a goal from Gennaro Tutino. That took the striker’s tally to 20 goals, just two behind eventual leading goalscorer Joel Pohjanpalo from Venezia.

However, it all unravelled in the second half. Spezia scored twice in five minutes thanks to goals from Francesco Pio Esposito and Arkadiusz Reca to secure a win and their safety, whereas Simone Verdi converted a penalty for Como with less than 15 minutes remaining.

The Lariani are back in Serie A for the first time in over 20 years, but Venezia will have to wait if they are to join them. The Arancioneroverdi will have to face the winner of Palermo vs Sampdoria in their first match of the playoffs.

Bari in with a chance of survival, Ascoli join Feralpisalo and Lecco in Serie C

If the race for promotion and the playoffs were tight, so was the battle to avoid the playout and the relegation zone. Bari and Ascoli needed to win their respective games and hope that the other would slip up, or hope that Ternana would lose to Feralpisalo.

The Rossoverdi did their bit to avoid relegation as a goal from Filippo Di Stefano in the first half was enough to secure a win against the Verdazzurri. Il Picchio took the lead in their match against the Nerazzurri with an Eric Botteghin goal, then Marco D’Alessandro equalised for Pisa, and Pablo Rodriguez scored the winner for the Piceni.

However, Bari won 2-0 against Brescia thanks to goals from Giuseppe Sibilli and Valerio Di Cesare. The deciding factor in this circumstance was the head-to-head record as the Galletti won 1-0 at home, then drew 2-2 in Ascoli Piceno. The Apulians and Ternana will play each other in a two-legged playoff on May 16 and 23 to see who stays in Serie B, and who goes down to Serie C with Ascoli, Feralpisalo, and Lecco.
