Serie B: Strefezza on fire for Como, Venezia striker Pohjanpalo impresses again

Serie B Matchday 24 was filled with goals and red cards whilst stars such as new Como winger Gabriel Strefezza and Venezia striker Joel Pohjanpalo played starring roles.

Parma are now six points clear at the top of the table after the conclusion of Serie B Matchday 24, but the battle for the remaining promotion and playoff spots are as exciting as ever.

The Gialloblu defeated Cittadella 2-1 whereas Cremonese in second place were held to a 1-1 draw against Reggiana. The Grigiorossi’s draw allowed Como to draw level after their 1-0 victory against Brescia with new winger Gabriel Strefezza scoring the only goal of the match.

Meanwhile, the race for the capocannoniere, or leading goalscorer title, is heating up. Massimo Coda is in excellent form for Cremonese while Sudtirol utility Daniele Casiraghi and Venezia forward Joel Pohjanpalo went head-to-head in Bolzano.

Strefezza dazzles for Como

Como secured a major signing during the January transfer window with Strefezza arriving on loan from Lecce. Although he featured regularly under Marco Baroni during the 2022/23 Serie A campaign, Baroni’s successor as coach, Roberto D’Aversa, was not utilizing the Italo-Brazilian as much and the relationship became strained.

With the Azzurri in the promotion fight, Strefezza provides them with quality and experience in getting a team promoted. The 26-year-old displayed his flair with a goal on debut for the Lariani against Ternana on Matchday 23, and he was the hero again when Como played Brescia on Friday evening.

One goal was enough for the Azzurri to win it against their Lombard rivals and Strefezza just needed seven minutes to score. Marco Curto played a through-ball to the diminutive winger, and he fired the ball into the net, albeit with the aid of a slight deflection off Rondinelle midfielder Fabrizio Paghera. The Lariani thought they had scored two more but both efforts were disallowed after VAR reviews.

Como are now level with Cremonese on 45 points, and their new arrival has two goals from two games. More heroics will be much appreciated if the Azzurri are to push for direct promotion.

Venezia steamroll Sudtirol thanks to Pohjanpalo

Prior to this round, Casiraghi has scored 12 goals in Serie B, whereas Pohjanpalo had found the back of the net nine times. However, eight of the goals scored by the Sudtirol player were penalties, and in this match, it was the Finn that shone in open play.

Pohjanpalo opened the scoring for Venezia with a side volley after 12 minutes, then Andrea Masiello was sent off in the 75th minute after receiving his second yellow card of the game. Francesco Zampano made it 2-0 after 81 minutes, finishing off a counter-attacking move, and Pohjanpalo got his second in injury time, timing his run into the box to perfection.

The Arancioneroverdi striker now has 11 goals for the season, just one behind Casiraghi, who played too deep to make any significant impact. To make matters worse for the Sudtirol veteran, Coda has now drawn level for goals scored with 12 after his volley against Reggiana.
