Serie B: Parma maintain lead at the top, but Cremonese crumble against Ternana

Parma defeated Spezia to maintain their lead after Serie B Matchday 33, but Cremonese's shock defeat to Ternana had implications in both the battles for promotion and relegation.

There were a number of results that impacted on both the battles for promotion and relegation on Serie B Matchday 33 including leaders Parma defeating Spezia.

The Crociati won 2-0 against the Aquilotti to take their lead to 69 points while the defeat for the Ligurian club meant that Ternana was able to leap above them in the table. The Rossoverdi produced the surprise of the round, defeating Cremonese 2-1 in Cremona and making a dent the hopes of direct promotion for the Grigiorossi.

Meanwhile, Como earned a 2-1 victory against struggling Bari, which allowed the Azzurri to breakaway from Cremonese and shrug off the challenge of Venezia, who defeated Brescia 2-0. The race for Serie A promotion has witnessed numerous positional changes, but the battle to avoid relegation to Serie C is also starting to heat up as a few clubs are at risk of being dragged in.

Ternana shock Cremonese and give themselves chance of survival

This encounter between Cremonese and Ternana was crucial for both sides, but for different reasons. The club from Lombardy are in the promotion battle whereas their opponents from Umbria are in the thick of the relegation battle.

The Grigiorossi opened the scoring after 13 minutes with a goal from Frank Tsadjout after an excellent team move, but Andrea Favilli equalised four minutes later for the Rossoverdi, when he was granted enough time and space to place his shot past Gianluca Saro. The Lombards tried to regain their lead and they dominated in many statistical categories.

Cremonese had 75% possession, took 27 shots to 11 with 10 hitting the target compared to six, completed 657 passes to 221, and had a passing accuracy of 90% compared to 66%. However, Filippo Di Stefano won it for Ternana six minutes into stoppage time with a rapid turn and shot.

The Grigiorossi dropped to fourth after Como and Venezia won their respective fixtures, and they are now five points off direct promotion. Meanwhile, the Rossoverdi are in a safer position as they have climbed out of the relegation zone, and they are also above the playout zone by a point.

Cutrone inspires Como victory over hapless Bari

Ternana’s surprise victory away to Cremonese was of great significance to Como and Bari as they needed points for their respective aspirations. The Azzurri came into this game in second place and were facing a team that had not won in seven matches.

The Lariani went ahead in the 38th minute after a Patrick Cutrone cross was headed in by Alessandro Gabrielloni, who scored his fourth goal in as many games, and the former AC Milan striker supplied another assist 15 minutes into the second half, providing a low cross for Lucas Da Cunha to score from close range. The Frenchman has found the back of the net in his last three appearances. George Puscas pulled one back near the end for the Galletti, but it was too little too late.

Como now have 64 points, five points behind leaders Parma and three points above Venezia. Meanwhile, Bari are two points above the relegation zone and sit in one of the positions for the playout. The Apulian club have lost six out of their last eight matches and coach Beppe Iachini needs to turn things around immediately.
