Sneijder: Inter will win Champions League final on penalties against Manchester City

Manchester City may be the overwhelming favourites to win the Champions League, but Wesley Sneijder thinks that Inter can get the better of the Premier League side right at the death.

It may come as no surprise to some that legendary former treble-winning Inter midfielder Wesley Sneijder is backing his former team to beat Manchester City in the Champions League final.

The Dutchman was crucial to Inter’s treble-winning season in 2010, making 41 appearances in all competitions and contributing with eight goals and 15 assists. Just like this current Inter team, Sneijder’s Inter were underdogs against a strong Bayern Munich side in the 2010 Champions League final.

A 2-0 win over the German side secured the treble for Inter and Sneijder still has fond memories of that night in Madrid. He is hoping his former team can triumph against an Erling Haaland-led Manchester City.

Sneijder predicting tight contest in Champions League final

Speaking to Quotidiano Sportivo, the former Dutch international is predicting a tight contest in Istanbul with Inter eventually being victorious on penalties.

“I say that it will end on penalties” Sneijder said. “And in the end, Inter will win.”

Sneijder goes on to predict what kind of style Inter will deploy on the night: “We won’t see an Inter team going on the attack. They will be very organised. Man City will be the team that attacks. Then we will have to wait. If we are still 0-0 at half time, then there will be chances.”

Manchester City go into the Champions League final looking to complete a historic treble, something that only one other English team has done before; Manchester United in 1999.

Sneijder compares potential trebles

The 39-year old, who won titles in the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Turkey believes that if Manchester City do complete the treble in Istanbul, it will not be the same as Inter’s in 2010 under Jose Mourinho.

Man City’s possible treble? They can do it, but I hope it doesn’t happen because of course I’ll support Inter” said Sneijder.

“In 2010 it was crazy because at the beginning of the season we didn’t think we could win everything. It happened during the year, we gained confidence.

“Yes, I think our Triplete has something more than Man City‘s could. Lifting the cup after having already won two more trophies is extraordinary,” added Sneijder.

Sneijder praises Man City and Haaland

Whilst Wesley Sneijder hopes his former team can secure their fourth Champions League in Turkey, he recognises that Inter are up against a formidable opponent in Manchester City and especially Erling Haaland.

“He [Haaland] was the missing part of Man City. They really needed a striker like him” Sneijder said of the Norweigan centre forward.

“He makes the difference up front and he has a lot of technical players around him.”
