AS Roma earned their first victory for the 2023/24 Serie A campaign, hammering Empoli 7-0 in their Matchday 4 fixture at the Stadio Olimpico.
Goals in the first half laid the foundations for the Giallorossi win. Paulo Dybala opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Azzurri defender Sebastian Walukiewicz committed a handball; Renato Sanches made it 2-0 shortly after; and Alberto Grassi scored a freakish own goal after Bartosz Bereszynski tried in vain to clear the ball.
It got worse for Empoli in the second half as AS Roma remained relentless in the second half. Dybala made it 4-0 after beating two defenders; Bryan Cristante added the fifth with a thunderous shot from long range; Romelu Lukaku found the back of the net with his non-preferred right foot, and captain Gianluca Mancini sealed the win from close range.
The victory takes AS Roma to equal 10th in the Serie A table with four points whereas Empoli remain rock bottom and without a point.
