Three takeaways from Borussia Dortmund 0-0 AC Milan: Pulisic disappoints against former club, Rossoneri fire blanks in fourth consecutive European match

AC Milan extended their scoring drought in Europe against Borussia Dortmund on Champions League Matchday 2 while Christian Pulisic flopped against his former club.

On Champions League Matchday 2, AC Milan demonstrated their inability to score goals in Europe, and they were held to a scoreless draw in their Group F encounter with Borussia Dortmund.

It was a disappointing performance from the Rossoneri, who cannot seem to score in Europe, and new winger Christian Pulisic failed to make an impact against the club that he played for over three years. Meanwhile, the point would have made BVB the happier team of the two due to their underwhelming record against clubs from Italy.

Pulisic underwhelming on return to Dortmund

Although Pulisic was signed in the summer from Chelsea for a reported figure of €20 million, the United States Men’s Football Team player arguably played his best football when he emerged at Borussia Dortmund.

He came through their youth ranks before making his senior debut in January 2016, and he remained with BVB until the end of the 2018/19 season, having scored 19 goals and supplied 26 assists in 127 competitive matches.

Unfortunately, Pulisic could not inspire AC Milan to victory against Borussia Dortmund, completing just 11 passes for the game, losing all five duels he was involved in, and he was not successful in his two attempted dribbles. He could have scored in the second half, but his effort was comfortably saved by Gregor Kobel in the BVB goal.

For the 25-year-old, it was a dismal homecoming of sorts at the Signal Iduna Park, and he was eventually replaced by Samuel Chukwueze after 69 minutes. In a stadium where he had dazzled the home fans in the past, he could not produce that magic in the AC Milan jersey on Wednesday evening.

AC Milan goal drought in Europe continues

Aside from that embarrassing 5-1 defeat to Inter in the Derby della Madonnina, AC Milan have been flying in Serie A, sitting on top of the table with their city rivals and scoring 15 goals in seven rounds so far. However, they have not brought this scoring prowess in their European fixtures this season and their drought has in fact extended from the last campaign.

The Rossoneri have not scored in the Champions League since Olivier Giroud found the back of the net in their 1-1 draw against Napoli in the second leg of the quarter-finals in 2022/23. Since then, they failed to score against Inter in the semi-finals, and they have registered 0-0 draws against Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund this season.

The Magpies showed their credentials in their Matchday 2 clash against Paris Saint-Germain, winning 4-1 against the Ligue 1 champions. AC Milan face PSG next and will face former Rossoneri goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who can be prone to the occasional error. The Rossoneri should seize upon this opportunity to break their scoring drought on Matchday 3.

Borussia Dortmund poor record against Serie A clubs continues

Prior to this match, Borussia Dortmund had faced Italian opposition in European fixtures on 37 occasions, winning 12 games, drawing six, and losing 19.

The last time BVB defeated an Italian team was in November 2019, when they came back from 2-0 down to defeat Inter 3-2 in the Champions League, and you have to go back to the 2002/03 edition for their last victory against AC Milan, when they won 1-0 at the Stadio San Siro.

Although the Germans avoided defeat this time, their negative run against Serie A teams remains, and it could be their downfall when the two sides play each other again on Matchday 5.
