Udinese vs AS Roma suspended after Giallorossi defender Evan Ndicka collapses

AS Roma's Serie A match against Udinese was suspended late in the second half after Giallorossi defender Evan Ndicka collapsed and was stretchered off the pitch

AS Roma defender Evan Ndicka collapsed and was stretchered off midway through the second half of the Giallorossi’s Serie A match against Udinese, prompting referee Luca Pairetto to suspend the fixture.

The Ivory Coast international fell to the ground off the ball in the 72nd minute and there were immediate calls for medical attention, before he was stretchered off the pitch to receive further support in the medical facilities near the dressing room.

Ndicka did not require a defibrillator on the pitch and was conscious as he was taken off, even offering a thumbs up gesture to the coaching staff on the touchline, but his collapse prompted serious concern from teammates and Udinese players and staff, leading to play being halted for 15 minutes.

De Rossi calls for match to be suspended

It is believed that the former Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back was complaining of chest pains before going down, and is due to undergo further medical examinations.

The decision was mutually taken by Roma coach Daniele De Rossi and Zebrette counterpart Gabriele Cioffi to halt proceedings, after the former held an on-field discussion with his team and felt they were not ready to continue.

Pairetto stopped the match at 1-1, with Romelu Lukaku‘s second half header cancelling out an early Roberto Pereyra goal, and the two teams will see out the final 18 minutes of play at a later date.

Ndicka has made 20 appearances in Serie A for Roma this season, after joining from Frankfurt as a free agent last summer.

The Giallorossi have confirmed that the player is conscious and has been taken to hospital for further checks.
