Who is Guglielmo Vicario? What Tottenham can expect from the Italy international

Tottenham are set to sign Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli, so what can the Premier League side expect from the Empoli man?

Guglielmo Vicario is set to join Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur this summer after spending the last two seasons at Empoli.

Tottenham will pay the Italian club €19 million for the 26-year-old, who has played a fundamental part in securing Serie A safety for the Tuscans since making their return to Italy’s top flight in 2021/22.

Vicario was linked with a move to Inter, who could be selling Andre Onana if the right bid comes in, but Tottenham have beaten the Italian giants to the Empoli goalkeeper’s signature.

Who is Guglielmo Vicario?

Guglielmo Vicario originates from Udine in the northeast of Italy, and he featured in the Udinese Primavera for one season before spending the 2014/15 season on loan at Serie D club Fontanafredda.

After that first experience of senior football in Italy’s fourth tier, he joined Venezia in 2015, and he earned them promotion to Serie C as well as Serie B. He spent the 2019/20 Serie B season on loan at Perugia and then signed for Cagliari in the following year. During his tenure at the Isolani, he was second choice to Alessio Cragno, but he was able to make four appearances in the 2020/21 Serie A season when Cragno was injured.

The Sardinians won three out of four games with Vicario in goal, but it was his performance in the 1-0 defeat to the eventual league champions Inter which earned him plaudits. If it was not for a plethora of magnificent saves from the Udine native, Cagliari would have lost by a more embarrassing margin.

Empoli signed him on loan in the summer of 2021 before acquiring him for €8.5 million in January 2022.

How good is Guglielmo Vicario?

Vicario is the type of goalkeeper that can atone for a leaky defence. Although he has not played for one of the big clubs in Serie A, Italy coach Roberto Mancini selected him in his Nations League squad for the matches against Spain and The Netherlands.

Throughout the 2022/23 Serie A campaign, Vicario made 31 appearances, 97 saves, one error leading to a goal, kept seven clean sheets, and he conceded 39 goals with an xG conceded of 49.65. He also saved two out of six penalties faced in the Italian league.

Compared to Tottenham stalwart Hugo Lloris, the French veteran made 25 Premier League appearances, 79 saves, four errors leading to a goal, kept seven clean sheets, and he conceded 39 goals with an xG conceded of 31.04. He also faced one penalty and failed to save it.

What can Guglielmo Vicario bring to Tottenham?

After Antonio Conte was sacked in March and replaced by Cristian Stellini, and then Ryan Mason as coach, Tottenham have appointed former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou to take charge for the next four seasons.

It is clear that Spurs need a long-term replacement for Lloris in goal, while Fraser Forster has failed to impress as deputy, so Vicario would be a welcome addition to the North London club.

The 26-year-old has great anticipation, composure, and reflexes. He has demonstrated in several games that he can cope with waves of attacks from the opposition, and he can produce very acrobatic saves.

An aspect of his game that can improve is his ability to play the ball out with his feet. Like many of his former Serie A contemporaries, Vicario is not a player that can operate as a sweeper-keeper with the aforementioned Onana and his AC Milan counterpart Mike Maignan being exceptions to that rule.

However, Postecoglou has shown throughout his career that he can get players to embrace his attacking principles, and Vicario might possess the ability to learn a new way of playing under the Greek-Australian tactician.
