Radu Dragusin has been a revelation for Genoa on their return to Serie A in 2023/24, and his performances have attracted several suitors, most notably Tottenham Hotspur.

The Romania Men’s National Team player has featured in all 18 matches for the Grifone in Serie A so far this season, contributing with two goals from the back, and he has been one of the reasons that the Rossoblu find themselves mid-table after their promotion from Serie B

According to Sky Sport, Tottenham are prepared to pay €30 million for the 21-year-old and a transfer to the Premier League club is imminent. A move to Spurs would be quite the leap for Dragusin after struggling to find his feet in senior football in the first couple of years of his career.

Where has Dragusin played before arriving at Genoa?

Dragusin was in the youth set-up of AS Metropolitan Estudiantes in his native Bucharest before joining the Juventus academy in 2018. In Turin, he rose through the ranks to make his senior debut for the Bianconeri in 2020 against Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League.

Uneventful loan spells at Sampdoria and Salernitana in Serie A prompted the Romanian youngster to make the drop down to Serie B in 2022/23. Genoa took him to Liguria on loan, he played in all 38 matches for the Grifone in the Cadetti, and the Rossoblu eventually bought him outright for €5.5m.

In addition to his performances at club level, Dragusin has represented Romania on 12 occasions and helped them qualify for the 2024 European Championship.

What makes Dragusin a top defender and what can he offer interested clubs?

Standing at 1.91 metres, Dragusin is a player who can compete in and dominate aerial duels, he is decent on the ball, and he can go up for set pieces to pose an attacking threat.

So far in the 2023/24 Serie A season, the 21-year-old has scored twice from four shots on target, completed 82.5% of his passes, 73.3% of his tackles, and 69.9% of his aerial duels.

According to Sky Sport Italia via Spurs Web, Napoli, AC Milan, and Atalanta are interested in the Romanian, but the North Londoners are thought to be the frontrunners to sign him. Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou wants to bring in more youngsters, and Spurs are in needed of reinforcements in defence after Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero suffered injuries.

It might seem premature for Dragusin to leave Genoa in January, but he has developed into an assured defender in Liguria, and he has the tools to succeed elsewhere.
