Women’s Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 14

Having arrived earlier in January, Madelin Janogy has made an immediate impact at Fiorentina and her two goals against Juventus on Women's Serie A Matchday 14 make her our Player of the Week.

The return of the Women’s Serie A after the Christmas break seems to have brought with it a new lethal striker who is tearing up defences for Fiorentina.

Madelen Janogy arrived at Fiorentina in January from Swedish side Hammarby, having won the league and the Swedish National Cup in her final season with the club. The 28-year-old signed a deal until June 2026 when she joined and the move seems to be a real statement of intent from a Fiorentina side that was already having a great season.

Signing an established Sweden international with over 240 career goals suggests that La Viola are serious about challenging AS Roma and Juventus, and it was against the latter that she netted twice in a 2-2 draw on Matchday 14 to continue her great start to life in Italy, and that also got her into our Women’s Serie A Team of the Week.

Janogy can be a difference-maker for Fiorentina

The 2023/24 season has already been a very promising one for Fiorentina. They have marked themselves out as being the clear third-best team in the division, behind Roma and Juventus.

Sebastian de la Fuente does not seem content with that, though, and feels that his team can take the fight to those above them. Janogy took a couple of games to bed in, coming off the bench away at Napoli and then starting in the Coppa Italia against Inter, but she’s then scored twice in a win over Pomigliano and now twice against Juventus.

Her first goal against the Bianconere really came against the run of play, but the best strikers take the chances when they come. Her movement in the box caught Lisa Boattin and Viola Calligaris off-guard and she dug out a good finish with the outside of the boot. That goal actually put Fiorentina above Juventus in the table.

The second goal was arguably better, as she showed great pace to get onto a pass into space and then produced a fine finish past Pauline Peyraud-Magnin. Juventus were able to equalise in the closing stages, but Fiorentina look more of a force now with Janogy in the side.
