Como Women‘s two-month wait for a win came to an end on Matchday 15 of the 2023/24 Women’s Serie A season in serious style, earning a big 3-2 win away at Inter. Como were fired to victory by an unplayable Zsanett Kajan, whose performance earned her the Women’s Serie A Player of the Week prize.
Kajan, who has just arrived in Seregno from Fiorentina this winter, proved too hot for the Nerazzurre to handle and she scored twice and assisted Julia Karlernas‘ winner to finally get Como back to winning ways.
Is Zsanett Kajan the answer to all of Como’s problems?
Como Women enjoyed an excellent start to their second season in Serie A, losing just one of their opening six games and that loss coming away at champions AS Roma, and new coach Marco Bruzzano looked to have taken them on another level after they avoided relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season.
But the goals soon dried up for Como, with Oona Sevenius looking more dangerous in her appearances from the bench than as a starter, and Melania Martinovic has managed to score just twice in 13 appearances so far since joining after having been relegated with Parma last term. It was starting to look as though Como had run out of ideas in the final third, with Karlernas often looking their biggest goalscoring threat from midfield while not being able to get into the box as often as she would like.
But Kajan‘s arrival brings hope that goals will return. Her two goals against Inter take her tally for 2023/23 to four, with two assists as well, and those numbers come in just eight appearances between her time with Fiorentina and Como. Last season with the Viola, she managed ten goal contributions (seven goals and three assists) in just 18 appearances, so she is a player who has proven to be a thorn in the side of Women’s Serie A defences.
Como will be pinning all of their goalscoring hopes on the Hungarian as they look to secure a top-half finish in the regular season or, failing that, to battle to stay above the bottom two places.
