FIFA world rankings pre-2023 Women’s World Cup: Where do Italy rank?

With the 2023 Women's World Cup on its way, the final set of FIFA World Rankings have been published and Italy remain some way off the elite.

The final set of FIFA Women’s World Rankings ahead of this summer’s 2023 Women’s World Cup have been released by world football’s governing body, and a number of teams have changed position since the previous publication.

The top three places in the Women’s World Rankings remain the same, with the United States, Germany and Sweden immovable in their podium positions. The USWNT have held on to top spot, with Germany second and Sweden third. Italy remain some way off the elite of women’s football.

Without too much change in the top 20 as the 2023 Women’s World Cup fast approaches, a number of friendlies have had some impact on the higher end of the charts. Spain have notably moved up a place into sixth, with Brazil also climbing one place to take eighth. Canada have fallen to seventh as a result and the Netherlands have slipped down into ninth. Spain taking sixth place has seen them equal their best-ever position.

The next FIFA Women’s World Rankings will be published on August 25, after the completion of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Italy have a long way to go before they are troubling the sides at the very top of the Women’s World Rankings, but the Azzurre will hope to benefit from Serie A Femminile’s move to full professionalism at the beginning of the 2022/23 season.

The last list of rankings was published back in the summer of 2022, when Italy held 15th place, which was one place below their previous position ahead of the 2022 Women’s European Championship. The Azzurre have since dropped down a place and they now find themselves 16th in the Women’s World Rankings.

2023 Women’s World Cup: What is Italy’s group?

There are eight groups of four teams at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, making it the biggest-ever Women’s World Cup. That means more eyes and more coverage of the matches in Australia and New Zealand.

Italy have been placed in a tricky Group G, meaning they will be one of the last teams to get their campaign underway. Italy’s group contains Sweden, South Africa and Argentina, meaning it would be a great achievement to get out of the group.
