Morocco heroics put Sabiri in the shop window, Sampdoria star has options

The World Cup can still be a shop window for some lesser-known top-flight players, and that is proving to be the case for Morocco and Sampdoria's Abdelhamid Sabiri.

Abdelhamid Sabiri has been a revelation for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, making a real impression off the bench for the North African side. The Sampdoria midfielder earned his first cap for the Atlas Lions as recently as September, but he has quickly earned the trust of Morocco coach Walid Regragui thanks to his attacking flair and unpredictability.

The 26-year-old’s performance in the 2-0 victory against Belgium, in particular, stood out, supplying the assist for the opening goal scored by Romain Saiss with an excellent free-kick.

Now Sabiri has been linked with a move away from Samp after the tournament and he has multiple suitors across the Italian peninsula.

Fiorentina lead list of suitors for Sabiri

With Sampdoria‘s ongoing ownership dilemma, the Ligurian club need to raise funds in January to lower the financial burden.

Il Corriere dello Sport reports that Samp wanted to sell Sabiri for at least €10 million prior to the World Cup but they might request higher bids from interested parties in light of his displays for Morocco.

Fiorentina seem to have the most interest out of all the Serie A clubs and they are looking to include Polish midfielder Szymon Zurkowski in the deal.

Meanwhile, Lazio and Torino had shown some interest in the Moroccan in the summer, and they could try to make greater efforts to lure him from Sampdoria in January.

Sabiri could leave Sampdoria after just one season

Sampdoria initially signed Sabiri from Serie B club Ascoli in late January on a loan deal and his performances in Serie A were enough to persuade the club to buy him outright for just €1 million in July.

Although he featured regularly when Marco Giampaolo was coach, he has been limited to appearances off the bench since Giampaolo was replaced by Dejan Stankovic in October.

Sabiri has scored five goals and supplied three assists in 27 competitive matches for Sampdoria.
